Gynecological Business in Slovakia

Today, we’re once again diving into the topic of healthcare together with Alona Kurotova and discussing the launch of a gynecological business and its prospects in the Slovak Republic. In our “About Business in Slovakia” segment, we often explore practical case studies and business opportunities in the medical field — and beyond.
This video is dedicated to the topic of medical business in Slovakia, specifically gynecological practice.
Gynecologists are considered first-contact physicians (similar to general practitioners and pediatricians), and there is a significant shortage of them in the country. The high demand is driven by the lack of specialists and the increasing female population due to migration.

Reform of the Outpatient and Polyclinic Sector

Since 2022, Slovakia has been implementing a reform consisting of three stages:

Stage 1: Analysis of Doctor Shortages

The government assessed the need for gynecologists, general practitioners, and pediatricians. A count of doctors across 72 specializations was conducted, and statistical maps were created.
There is a critical shortage of gynecologists in the following regions:
  • Malacky
  • Piešťany
  • Tvrdošín
  • Veľký Krtíš (Volkovce may be a typo or misinterpretation)
  • Kríž
  • Sabinov
  • Bardejov

In total, there is a shortage of 35 specialists. The problem is worsened by the fact that 61% of gynecologists are over 63 years old, which will lead to an even greater deficit in the near future.

Stage 2: Improving Conditions for Doctors

Raising the status of gynecologists and revising the financing system. A change in the reimbursement mechanism is planned to ensure that gynecologists earn a decent income.

The goal is to make this type of medical business profitable and attract new specialists.

Stage 3: Reducing administrative burden

Doctors are overwhelmed with bureaucracy (documents, reports, administrative procedures). Reforms are expected that will allow medical professionals to spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Now is the perfect time to start a gynecological business in Slovakia.

The Ministry of Health supports this field, and the government is interested in its development. Akur offers services for opening gynecological offices and clinics, obtaining licenses, and signing contracts with health insurance companies. Gynecological practice is in high demand, as it is a business with guaranteed demand. The demographic situation in the country is deteriorating, which makes support for the healthcare sector especially relevant. This is the right moment to enter the market.
